Cavity Prevention for Children − Louisville KY

Most of the time cavities are due to a combination of inadequate, daily flossing and brushing and a frequent diet, high in simple or complex carbohydrates.

Cavity Prevention Overview

Limiting the frequency of snacks, meals or drinks (except water)along with ideal, daily flossing and brushing, is the answer. Every time you eat or drink anything, (including “non-sugared” items as milk, green beans, bread, liquid or chewable medicines or vitamins, essentially anything) the bacterial plaque begin digesting and metabolizing the carbohydrate.

Just like us, the bacteria have a metabolic “end-product” to digestion. We sometimes tell kids that, “Yes, the bacteria (Sugar Bugs) go to the bathroom on your teeth and gums.” The metabolic “wastes” are very acidic. Within 10 minutes, after eating or drinking, acid wastes are being secreted on teeth and gums, essentially “burning” and eating them and over time, creating cavities and bleeding gum disease. This reaction lasts approximately 60 minutes, possibly all night long if eating/drinking within 1 hour of bedtime. During this time the acid environment can destroy the tooth structure, and gums.
